Welcome to Chemistry 276, Carbon Compounds.  The laboratory is set up to reinforce those concepts taught in Chemistry 275.  The experiments are designed to demonstrate the principles of organic chemistry in a ways relevant to the majors who may be taking this course.  Hopefully, the experiments perk your interest in organic chemistry.

One three hour laboratory is scheduled each week.  You are expected to come to lab adequately prepared.  Prior to each laboratory you must thoroughly read the experiment, noting any precautions. Each week your teaching assistant will give a short quiz to test your knowledge of that week’s experiment.  You must obtain the experiments from the home page prior to coming to lab.  Experiments may not be downloaded in the laboratory.  No lab grades will be dropped.  Be sure to bring your textbook with you to lab.  Approved eye protection is required for the laboratory.  Students not wearing approved eye protection or approved clothing will not be allowed into the laboratory.  It is also recommended that you bring a padlock to lock your equipment drawer.

In the laboratory you will have the opportunity to experience some chemical principles in hands on environment.  Some chemical concepts may be introduced in the laboratory.  Lab grades will be based on preparation, safe work practices, quizzes, performance, lab reports and comprehension of the lab material.  The grading will be as follows:

12 experiments             15 points each              total: 180 points

12 quizzes                        5 points each              total: 60 points

                                                                     Total: 240 points

There will be no make-up laboratories given.  If you have a University excused absence, you will need to talk to your instructor.

Failure to complete more than two laboratory sessions

will result in a failing grade for the course.
